On Monday, acting President of Ukraine, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov met with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament Elmar Brok and members of the European Parliament.

“Ukraine lives through a difficult period but the main thing is that the situation is getting more stable each day,” noted Oleksandr Turchynov, adding that it is extremely important “because we have received the country in a very bad condition.” According to him, lots of high ranking officials have left their posts “without transferring their affairs.”

In the course of the meeting, Oleksandr Turchynov has claimed that all of the decisions were adopted by the constitutional majority of votes. “As of today, the only legitimate body is the Parliament,” he stressed.

In connection with the difficult economic situation, said Oleksandr Turchynov, the main priority for today is formation of the coalition Government and the new parliamentary majority. According to him, until the Cabinet of Ministers is formed, he, as the Chairman of the Parliament, is entrusted to coordinate activity of governmental structures. Oleksandr Turchynov informed also that the Constitution in the renewed version of 2004 stipulates that in case of absence of the President his duties shall be performed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.

Oleksandr Turchynov stressed that as soon as the presidential vertical is renewed, he will step down from office.

In his turn, Elmar Brok noted that the today’s authority in Ukraine is legitimate. The main thing, according to him, is to preserve integrity of the country. “We want your citizens to feel themselves safe and that church bells sounded not as a warning against Berkut attacks, but as a beginning of a new day,” he said.

He believes that it is necessary to form the majority. “We will help you in any possible way on the way to reforming Ukraine,” noted Elmar Brok.

Oleksandr Turchynov expressed gratitude to the European Parliament members for the support to Ukraine.
